Dawn of the Dead (UK Cinema: April 2004)

The latest rehash for the superficial generation has garnered surprising applause from critics for its reverential updating of the original. Sure, compared to many recent remakes, director Snyder is keen not to tarnish the myth of perhaps the greatest horror of the 70's/80's heyday. However, if the filmmakers had that much reverence why remake it in the first place? Did they think they could improve on it? If so, they were sadly misguided.

Despite Snyder's obsequious pandering to Romero's original (ie. cameos from the original cast) his only original idea is borrowed from 28 Days Later, otherwise we get the expected noughties fare: a light skimming of plot, new shallows of characterisation left unplundered & large holes in development & action.

All of which leads me to ask: has the media become infected?

PS. I get sick of saying this, but go see the original instead...
